aynsley dunbar interview
And lo and behold, all of a sudden you started hearin Lights on the radio. As soon as you get stuck into counting, you forget what is happening out front. Aynsley was also a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Thats interesting. Which was, I gotta get signed before its too late. [laughs]. Was that a hard pill to swallow at first? Thats about all. But a few more days of the hazards of what was going on made me decide that it was time to disband Blue Whale I didn't sign any contracts or anything else with Zappa-just moved out of England. And theyre all good. So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. A lot of them are criticizing you because they are frustrated musicians. To the average person, they just don t like drum solos. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. Okay. I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. Those are the guys that I look up to. You didnt make another record for ten years after that. There was a lot of stuff that we didnt agree on. Because they said we all sounded alike. I stll perspire a lot, but it's just from my body working. **Do you think you made bad decisions in terms of how you handled things with the band? I started Blue Whale, which was an 8-piece band. Did you enjoy working with another drummer? I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. He offered me the gig with him at 20 pounds a week, which at that point, was like 60 bucks. It just completely slays me. And a lot of time spent together can chew on a friendship. So I went to do my first solo record with him. RM: The Starship rhythm section is really solid. Do you get tired of it being defined by his presence or his absence? Two summers ago I was asked by Sony to oversee the remastering of the entire catalog. What did you mean when you said, on that VH1 special, that youd never really felt like part of the band? It's a great interview that gives insight into how mega-bands really work. But that can make you perspire too much and you can get cramps from the lack of salt. And life just said, I think youve got to go deal with this. Cause I was not happy with things in my life. At the end of the last video from my solo album, for Foolish Heart, theres an extra tag-on section that I shot for the video, to just tell everybody that that particular phase of my career was now over and now Im back to Journey. I had complete confidence in the whole process. You mentioned Aynsley Dunbar, who is such a great, yet often overlooked, drummer. Possibly. I'm not that disciplined. It was kind of weird, because as soon as we started cranking up, the orchestra sort of disappeared. His exact words were, Youre some big shoes to fill, but we wanna get out there. I stayed with them for about six months, just to help them out because there wasn't really any band around that I could join that could take over from Zappa. Anybody who plays in a group must realize that everybody in the group must always be aware of everybody else. This is a drag, after all this hard work. And Herbie [Herbert] had received a tape from somebody at the label, of Steve Perry. Fine. We redid everything. We lived together when I first joined the band. Aynsley Dunbar as Himself/Biff Junior Roy Estrada as Himself Francesca Fisher as The Countess Bunk Gardner as Himself Buzz Gardner as Himself Lowell George as Himself Dick Kunc as Himself Manfred Lerch as Himself C. Mercedes Lewis as Girl Who Was A Sofa Sal Lombardo as Himself Meredith Monk as Red Face Girl Billy Mundi as Rollo I told him what my deal was and he agreed to it. Way after that. In 1973 he also recorded Lou Reed's album Berlin with Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, and Tony Levin. If wed had a crystal ball back then, we woulda wrote twelve of those. But Im just not in it for the money. And theres been some others, that I think have just been wonderful. [laughs] Of course! Doing a record isnt like the rigors of touring, but its a demand on your time. I got a phone call from Jon, and I could tell Neal was on the phone, cause I can tell when the line levels down, and I could hear him breathing, I think. AD: Three days a week. Then I listened to Billy Cobham on the Spectrum album, and I like what he was doing. So why bother having it? Those songs, and those tracks. I been uplifted when he called, but when heard "country/western" I went back down. And Id sleep, and Id wake up, go do the gig, and the same thing would happen all over again. But I lwould always come off stage at the end of a set feeling totally and utterly exhausted, and; I was always getting sick on the road because I would be so run down from; pushing myself to the limit all of;the;;' time. Dunbar was asked by Kantner to leave in 1982, with Donny Baldwin taking his place in September. I Thought Mentalphysics Was New-Age Nonsense. You know what? This is the healthiest Ive ever been, and I think its the best Ive been playin. I wasnt sure what the Sopranos use was gonna be. People trying to sell hot dogs with your music. Probably some time ago, yeah, I could have done that. What happened? And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. And so now Ive been sober for the last nine months, and I never want to look back. And it was all based around Steve giving us a call and saying Okay, Im fine now, Im ready to go. And it just didnt happen. I was always on the edge of being what I expected out of myself, and what people wanted me to be, and I never wanted to settle for anything short of what it should be. So I thought about It, you know, and I went back home. I joined the band in 1978. RM: Earlier, you mentioned that you don't..like playing songs note for note the same every time. Now I feel like I have 100 percent of myself here, and Im more into it than Ive ever been into it. He's with the Starship." Thats right. I wanna let go. And Im sure they thought, Oh, there he goes. But it just hasnt happened. You forget about it if you don't play it, and most rock bands don't tend to play it. I sat down with em at the edge of the marina, and I said I cant do this anymore. AD: I never had any problem. David Frieberg, our bass and key- board player, had been going to Nautilus for about a year, so I decided to go along and try it and see what it was like. I was concerned that it would play while somebody got whacked. I could play million notes a minute and get away with it. In the beginning, it felt extremely freeing. Neal did a solo album way before I was thinking about it, with Jan Hammer. I only sing in the shower! RM: It looks as though you are singing to yourself while you solo. But I don't feel I want to jump on that particular bandwagon. I couldn't leave the people in my band just to do some wandering around the country, although it would have led to the Led Zeppelin gig, which was offered to me as well. The rock drumming GIANT turned down both Jimmy Page's offer to form Led Zeppelin and Robert Fripp's to start King Crimson from out of the ashes of Giles, Giles & Fripp; quit the original Jeff Beck. He started playing violin, but he later changed to drums. And I think that actually might have provoked Perry to go and do a solo record. This was in the 80s? It's fun while you're there, especially if you're building something you want to build-like a song that you will be performing on stage. I had to spend some time doing something which didn't take too much mental thought-something I could just have fun with. Its extremely gratifying to have people come up and say Open Arms was my prom song, and to this day, my husband and I still listen to it. Or when guysll come up and say, Yknow, I wasnt into youse guys, but if I took a chick to your concert you know what Im sayin? I get the whole spectrum. When he was touring behind his solo record? RM: And he, in turn, will take you to different places; RM: This all ties in with what you were telling me the other night about how you base most of what you do on listening to the melody. Im sure I was a bitch to deal with. AD: When he's soloing, I tend to try and watch him because it's not only hearing it's also eye contact. a story about the new lead singer of Journey. As bizarre as it sounds, I felt like nothing had ever happened, like our arc of success almost didnt exist. **Did you just realize at some point that you needed a frontman? But they didnt have any quote hit records, and werent on the radio much. The clip below is from the last interview he gave 2 months This past weekend I began my re-read of all Carl Sagan's books + his video - Gregory Bufithis sa LinkedIn Most of the drum parts on that were written down. They'd get a gig somewhere else paying a couple of pounds more, so they would send a substitute to play with me. I just thought it was part of the aging process. Oh, yknowtheres no legal issue with talking about him. I practically learned to play them on stage. I go there, from time to time, when Im in town. : aynsleydunbar.com, Wikipedia, drummerworld.com : Junior Dunn : Is it safe to say that theres not communication between you anymore? Aynsley Dunbar Age 2022. I've been with them for about four years now. So its always a fine, artful dance. There are a lot of good musicians out there whose names are not known-even with some of the top bands. Cause we wanna get out there. That particular set of words. And I imagine its much harder to take care of it. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. In the winter of 1969 Retaliation appeared at the 5-day Actuel Festival, which was also attended by Frank Zappa . They wanted to make it on their own goalposts. Much like a lot of people are. Posted on April 23, 2017 by Olivier in Uncategorized // 0 Comments. It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. I've been collecting material for it. I'm definitely thinking about doing it, but I want to have a plan of approach. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. But most of the time I had a free hand. By the time you damp a larger drum, you'll end up with a 20" head anyway. But I've taught Scotty Ross how to do it as well, and he's quite good at it. And then finally, months went by, and the band got impatient. Because if you do, you will fracture the stone. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. It was through the Beatles that they started moving records across the ocean faster . AD: I like the albums I've done with the Starship, of course. I only know that theyve been through three guys, and Ive never heard any of em, and theres no need to. I think the beginning of the end was when Neal started his solo career. Sure. Call it the J-Boys. Im looking at it very simply. _[laughs] _I cant believe that this is news. So, yeah. And people didnt understand what that meant. I just needed to stop. I know I'm going to do an album sometime. I was playing in the band, and Ruth played drums with the orchestra. Originally I was only going to play on half the record, and they were going to do the other half with another studio musician. And no contracts were really binding me to have to be or do anything anymore. We were just playing dance music, but because I had been practicing for a few years, I was able to play along with all of the people who were my heroes. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. Then I had trouble with Bowie 's management. Cant you just, yknownot do that? And, he asked me again: We wanna know when youre going to surgery. But the reason I do that is so I can listen back to all the things I played and pick out the parts that worked and sounded good. Giving me high fives.
